The piping trades apprenticeship programs lead to certification as a journeyperson Plumber, Sprinkler systems installer or Steamfitter-pipefitter.

Apprentices work for employees who can provide accepted workplace training. Apprentices are hired by small and large employers, and by joint union-management training committee.

Plumbers and Pipefitters:

A UA Local 324 apprentice starts out at 45% of the journeyman's rate. On top of the hourly rate the apprentice gets 12% holiday pay as well as Health, Welfare and Pension contribution. The apprentice receives an increase every 6 months to the time he finishes his apprentice.

Plumber:

A plumber installs, services and repairs pipe and plumbing systems that provide hot and cold water, and dispose of sewage from residential, commercial, industrial and public buildings. Plumbers use building plans and specifications to water supply network, hot water facilities, sewage waste drainage, and plumbing fixtures. Plumbers work in accordance with the regulations prescribed in the B.C. Plumbing code and the Canadian Plumbing code regarding the installation and repair of plumbing and related equipment for water gas, steam and other materials.

Plumbing Apprentice:

As an apprentice, you will learn to use tools to position and custom cut installation holes for pipes and fixtures, applying basic knowledge of water supply and waste disposal systems. You will also learn to cut, thread and install pipe with a variety hand and power tools, and to test lines, install fixtures, solder and caulk, and thaw frozen pipes.

Workplace Training:

Plumbing apprenticeship workplace training lasts for 4 years with four in-school training sessions of six, six, six and eight weeks respectively.

Sprinkler System Installer:

Sprinkler System Installers design, assemble, install, maintain and repair a wide variety of high and low pressure sprinkler systems for fire protection in industrial operations, department stores, office buildings, hotels, schools and hospitals.

Sprinkler System installer Apprentice:

As an apprentice, you will learn to read building plans and specifications to determine the materials required for individual sprinkler systems. You will also learn to measure, cut, thread, bend and join pipe using a range of specialty tools, and to custom cut installation holes. 

Workplace Training:

Sprinkler system installer apprentice training lasts for four years, with four in-school training sessions of six weeks each.

Steamfitter-Pipefitter:

A steamfitter-pipefitter installs, maintains and repairs high- and low- pressure steam and hot water piping systems found in industrial operations such as oil refineries, pipelines, power plants, pulp mills and the ship yards. Steamfitter-pipefitters also install and replace auxiliary equipment, including pressure regulating valves, gaskets and steam traps.

Steamfitter- Pipefitter Apprentice:

As an steamfitter-Pipefitter apprentice, you will learn to cut, thread, place and fit pipe using a range of specialty tools. You will also learn position pipe in prepared ditches, overhead, on ground surfaces, and to connect sections together with customized parts and tools.

Workplace Training:

Steamfitter-pipefitter apprentice workplace training lasts for four years with four in-school training sessions of six, six, six and eight weeks, respectively.
